As Karl Lagerfeld supremely demonstrated, the formalities of the Chanel canon are continuously open to reinterpretation. While remaining true to Chanel’s femininity and decorativeness, his former first assistant and successor has added her own quirky flair to the blend. Some of the outfits were worn with tweed bermudas, bloomers, or leather shorts, as well as white floral lace tights and knee boots.
Viard’s nighttime look was composed of camellia-print silk dresses layered over sweaters and longjohns. This was more of a depiction of what Parisian style might imply as worn by women on the street (similar to Nicolas Ghesquière’s collection for Vuitton). It was encouraging to see Viard broaden her perception of reality to include mid-size models. As unique as Chanel’s camellias are, it’s a house that has something for every woman.
