The last king or Greece, and godfather of Prince William’s has passed away at the age of 82, his doctors have announced.
According to reports, Constantine II was hospitalized in Athens, Greece last week due to breathing issues.
The Greek public broadcaster ERT announced on Wednesday, 11th January that the king passed away after suffering a stroke.
Constantine was a close friend and one of the six godparents of William, and he was also closely associated with King Charles, who was his second cousin.
His passing was confirmed by the staff of private Hygeia Hospital in Athens where he was treated in the intensive care unit. Further details are to be announced officially.
Constantine II ruled as the last king of Greece from March 1964 until the country’s monarchy was abolished in 1973.
He and his wife, Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, lived in Hampstead in north London for many years before he sold his property in 2013.
He ruled over one of the most turbulent periods in Greece’s political history.
The last King was also a competitive sailor and Olympian, winning a gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics in the Dragon class.
