“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll,’ died peacefully today at the age of 83 in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness,” her family announced in a statement Wednesday. “With her, the world loses a musical legend and a role model.”

Turner infused an uncontrolled, fiery theatrical presence into pop beginning with her appearances with her ex-husband Ike. Turner never seemed to be restrained, even with rehearsed backing vocalists, both with Ike and during her own career. Her impact on rock, R&B, and soul singing and performance was equally enormous. Everyone from Mick Jagger to Mary J. Blige was impacted by her delivery, and her high-energy stage appearance (complete with a slew of gravity-defying wigs) was passed down to Janet Jackson and Beyoncé. Turner’s message, which resonated with generations of women, was that she could compete onstage with any guy.

Turner’s second legacy, though, was much more personal and concerned a lot more complex guy. Turner was frequently assaulted and humiliated while working with Ike, a demanding and frequently drug-addled bandleader and guitarist. Her subsequent revival, beginning with her hugely popular, Grammy-winning 1984 makeover Private Dancer, elevated her to the status of a symbol of survival and renewal.
