Ivory Coast has won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The host country concluded the thrilling tournament with an equally exciting win against Nigeria on Sunday night after they clinched victory in the final with a score of 2-1, after initially trailing.
Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong headed Nigeria’s only goal in the 38th minute.
After a strong comeback in the second half, Ivory Coast levelled the score at 1-1 in the packed stadium when Franck Kessie scored in the 62nd minute. The winning goal came from Sebastian Haller amidst massive celebrations in the 81st minute.
Ivory Coast clinched their third African Cup victory. Their previous wins were in 1992 and 2015.
In the first round, Ivory Coast defeated Senegal in a penalty shootout. Moving on to the quarter-finals, they secured a victory against Mali with a goal in extra time. In the semi-finals, they dominated with an 8-1 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a goal scored by Haller.
