Draghi told Parliament on Thursday that he would meet with President Sergio Mattarella to inform him of his plans after failing to unite his coalition government.

President Mattarella asked Draghi to lead a caretaker government in the interim.

“Thank you for all of your efforts over the past few months. Following the vote by the Republic’s Senate last night, I request that this session be adjourned because I am on my way to the President of the Republic to communicate my intentions “Draghi told lawmakers on Thursday morning.

Draghi resigned after coalition partners rejected him in a vote of confidence in the Senate on Wednesday, effectively collapsing the government.
