Is Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ The Biggest Sound In Nigerian Music History?

Mavin Records star Rema had an outstanding 2022, all thanks to his hit track ‘Calm Down’ which spread like an inferno across the globe. The original sound is a track off Rema’s debut “Raves and Roses’’ album in 2022.

Following its release on February 11, 2022, ‘Calm Down’ became the fastest Afrobeat song to hit 100 million views in less than 3 months.

Due to the song’s success, American singer Selena Gomez collaborated on a remix with Rema.

Talking about the remix, Selena said:

“I am really excited to see the person that asked me to be on the song that I couldn’t be more honoured to do. So…The song is fun, I hope people like it.’’

Like Selena hoped, the impact of the song traveled beyond borders and thrilled listeners across venues, be it at a club house, stadium, and other public centers. After the remix with Selena, the song rose to No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at No. 35 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The song also saw Rema achieve a significant height in his career in 2022, as he became the latest African artist to hit over a billion views across different platforms.

Calm Down has continued dominating the Nigerian music space in 2023, as it overtook CKay’s ‘Love Nwantiti’ as the most viewed Nigerian song on YouTube. High-profile music chart publication TurnTable Charts made the revelation via a tweet on Sunday, January 29, 2023.

 

As of the time of writing this report, the original song has over 359 million views on YouTube, while the remix featuring Selena Gomez has over 267 million views on the global streaming platform.

Rema has yet to drop a sound in 2022, but we expect him to build on the successes achieved in 2022 and become a bigger brand.
