Interview: Bukky Wright speaks on career change abroad, teases Nollywood comeback

In recent years, a notable number of Nigerian entertainment industry veterans have relocated abroad, often venturing into new professions and businesses. This trend reflects both the global mobility of talent and the diverse opportunities available beyond Nigeria’s borders. Celebrities such as Funsho Adeolu, eLDee (Lanre Dabiri), 2Shotz (William Orioha), Femi Brainard, Opeyemi Aiyeola, Lola Alao, Regina Aska, Georgina Onuoha, Ssandra Achums, Comedian Princess, Toyin Adewale, Bayo Bankol amongst others.

Veteran, Oluwabukola Sekinat Ajoke Wright professionally known as Bukky Wright who has been off the movie scene disclosed in an interview with The Punch that she took a break from acting after relocating to the United States.

The mother of two who recently returned to Nigeria recalled how her career took a new direction during her time abroad. She ventured into the tech industry, a path many doubted she could pursue successfully.

“I will be practising it [tech] simultaneously with entertainment. The fact that I had to deviate totally from entertainment to tech was something many people thought I would not be able to do. I would tell all my mentees that if I can do it, they can do it too.”

Reflecting on her time away, the actress revealed what she missed most about Nigeria. Her words:

“What I would love to eat again would be proper Naija amala. What I would like to do again would be to act with Nollywood actors.”

Bukky Wright, speaking on her highly anticipated Nollywood comeback, reassured fans that thrilling projects are on the way. She hinted at…

“I have a lot for fans, including my project—‘The Return of Omotara Johnson,’ which is coming, and a whole lot of other things. I am back to stay.”

When asked about her ageless looks, she attributed it to prioritising rest, saying, “I don’t joke with my beauty sleep.”

It is worth noting that relocation underscores the adaptability of Nigerian entertainers in pursuing diverse career paths internationally. While the entertainment industry in Nigeria continues to grow, factors such as economic conditions, personal aspirations, and the search for new opportunities contribute to this migration trend.
