Scolari was the manager of Portugal when Ronaldo made his senior debut for the Selecao in 2003.
He was the team’s manager for five years before leaving in 2008 to join Chelsea.
The Brazilian coach stated that he had to inform Ronaldo of his father’s death in 2005, but that the forward chose to play despite the situation.
“When the news came to us, just before a game against Russia, nobody knew how to tell him, and nobody wanted to.
“So I told them I’d do it because I knew what it was like to lose a parent. “I’d lost mine a few years ago,” he explained.
“The following day, Cristiano played a fantastic game and returned to Portugal. He requested to play. ‘I can’t do anything for my father today, so I’ll play tomorrow and then go,’ he said.
