Glamsquad Style and Heroes Awards 2019

The year 2019 was a handful, while everyone seems to struggle with one challenge or the other in their various fields – only a few did all they could to hang on – one minute longer.

The fashion, entertainment and lifestyle industry was not any different. Despite its up-and-downs all through the year, some paid the price for success through hard work and commitment.

These few are heroes worthy of recognition and have made it to our final Style and Heroes Awards 2019 list.

And the winners are…

Politician of the year – Shina Peller

Shina Abiola Peller is a Nigerian entrepreneur, politician, Industrialist. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of Aquila Group of Companies and Club Quilox. He is the Hon. Member of the Nigeria ninth national assembly. He announced his resignation from the board of Quilox night club due to his official duties as a member of the House of Representatives. 

Stylist of the year – Chyna Bee

Chyna Bee is a renowned celebrity stylist and Beauty Entrepreneur who has worked with many celebrities both in Nigeria and abroad. She is the official stylist of Nigerian superstar, Tiwa Savage. In December 2019 she launched her ultra-modern beauty salon, CB Beauty and Spa in Lekki, Lagos. 

Beauty Company of the year – BM Pro

BM pro is a Makeup and cosmetics brand owned by Banke Meshida. It prides itself as a professional company which offers services ranging from makeup, hair, photoshoots and training. The name BMPRO is an acronym for BANKE MESHIDA PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP. They are responsible for many of the flawless makeovers sported by celebrities in 2019. 

Movie Director of the year – Genevive Nnaji

Genevive Nnaji directed her first movie, Lionheart. Lionheart is a Nigerian drama film produced by Chinny Onwugbenu and directed by Genevieve Nnaji. It stars Pete Edochie, Genevieve Nnaji, and Nkem Owoh. It was acquired by Netflix, making it the first Netflix original film produced in Nigeria.

Movie of the year – Mokalik

Mokalik is a Nigerian movie about an eleven-year-old. Ponmile’s life changes when he is sent to work as an apprentice at a mechanic workshop far from his home in the suburbs, and he must make a tough decision about his future. The movie was released on May 31, 2019, and dire ted by the award-winning Kunle Afolayan.

Song of the Year – Brown Skin Girl by Beyonce

“Brown Skin Girl” is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé, Guyanese singer Saint Jhn and Nigerian singer Wizkid, featuring Blue Ivy Carter from the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift. The song was sent to Top 40/Rhythmic radio on July 23, 2019, as the second single from the soundtrack. Billboard magazine ranked “Brown Skin Girl” as the 68th best song of 2019, saying the song “bolsters Beyoncé’s crusade for cultural pride and female empowerment”. The song was the most streamed female song of 2019 on Apple Music in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

Music Album of the year – African Giant

African Giant is the fourth studio album by Nigerian singer Burna Boy. It was released on July 26, 2019, by Spaceship Entertainment, Bad Habit, Atlantic Records and Warner Music. The album is a mixture of Afro-fusion, Afrobeat, dancehall, pop and hip hop. It has won over a dozen awards and crashed multiple records since its release.

Fashion Icon of the year – Naomi Cambell

Naomi Elaine Campbell is an English model, Actress, and businesswoman. Discovered at the age of 15, she established herself amongst the most recognizable and in-demand models of the late 1980s and has managed to keep herself in the sport light till date. In 2019, she was a headliner for top events across the world.

Designer of the year – Deola Sagoe

Deola Sagoe is a fashion designer, extraordinaire. She is a source of inspiration to many fashion designers and fashion enthusiasts in Nigeria and beyond. She created the outfit for the traditional wedding of Nigerian music superstar, 9ice and Olasunkanmi last week.

Woman of the year – Shade Okoya

Our May 2019 cover feature for Glamsquad Magazine, Mrs Shade Okoya is a gem. She is a mother, wife and businesswoman per excellence.

Mrs Shade Okoya is married to Chief Razak Akanni Okoya, a billionaire industrialist. They have four children together, Olamide, Subomi, Oyinlola and Wahab.

Model of the year – Adesuwa Aighewi 

Adesuwa Aighewi is an Nigerian-American fashion model and filmmaker. In 2018, she was chosen as the runner up for “Breakout Star of the Year” by models.com As of January 2019, Aighewi ranks as one of the “Top 50” models by models.com. She was a nominee for the model of the year 2019.

 

Music artiste of the year – Teni 

Teniola Apata, better known as Teni, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and entertainer. Teni has come a long way since she first stormed the Nigerian industry in 2016. Slow and steady, Teni has come a long way and carved a niche for herself. Her single titled ‘Billionaire’ was an anthem for music lovers across the country during the festive periods.

Sports Personality of the year – Anthony Joshua

Loosing and regaining the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles and regaining them in the same year is no mean feat. Anthony Joshua has proven himself to be a force to reckon with in the heavyweight boxing division.

Actress of the year – Sola Sobowale

Popularly known as Toyin Tomatoes for her role in a popular TV series in the past, Sola Sobowale has become a titan in Nollywood. Her role in 2019 movie, King of Boys won her a lot of accolades including Actress of the year at AFRIMMA in 2019.

Accessory designer of the year – Katherine-Mary Pichulik 

KatherineMary Pichulik is a hugely talented and creative South African entrepreneur based in capt Town. She is a jewellery accessory designer. Her works have modelled across the globe, and she is a great inspiration to many. Her inspiration comes from the alchemy of transforming everyday materials through craft, touch and design and elevating them into something beautiful.

Social media influencer of the year – Tosin Ajibade

Tosin “OloriSuperGal” Ajibade is a Nigerian known for her lifestyle and entertainment website, OloriSuperGal.com. She is also the organizer of the New Media Conference that is held annually in Nigeria. Tosin has taken social media influencing to another level and deserves to be our social media influencer for 2019.

Media personality of the year – Toke Makinwa

Toke Makinwa is a Nigerian radio personality, television host, vlogger, lifestyle entrepreneur and author. She is known for hosting The Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM and for her YouTube vlog series Toke Moments. In 2019, Towe was everywhere. She graced many magazine covers and headlined various shows.
