Giannis Antetokounmpo launche Igbo learning center in Lagos 'My parents language dispute insired me'

Greek-Nigerian professional basketball player, Giannis Sina Ugo Antetokounmpo has opened a learning centre in Lagos aimed at enhancing Igbo literacy among children in Nigeria.

Giannis Antetokounmpo disclosed that he is inspired to open the Igbo learning centre because his parents fought over which language to teach their children.

The athlete, born to a Yoruba father and an Igbo mother, relocated to Greece 35 years ago.

Giannis also noted that his surname is originally Adetokounbo, however, he was required to spell it using Greek letters for his visa which eventually began the origin of the famous ‘Antetokounmpo’.

He also shared that his father discouraged learning Igbo, while his mother opposed learning Yoruba, resulting in them not learning any Nigerian language. However, his mother secretly taught them how to count in Igbo and shared stories about her roots.

Meanwhile, the unveiling in Lagos was captured in a homecoming film using WhatsApp, showcasing Giannis’ first visit to Nigeria in July 2023.
