Flavour distance self from Afrobeats, urges media to recognize other African genres

Singer, Flavour has joined the growing list of Nigerian artistes who distance themselves from the Afrobeats music genre.

On a recent episode of the ‘Afrobeats Podcast’ with Shopsydoo, Flavour shared that he’s unbothered by the lack of credit for the global rise of Nigeria’s Afrobeats genre because he doesn’t identify as an Afrobeats artist.

He emphasized that while he deserves recognition for his contributions to African music, it’s overlooked because the media focuses solely on promoting Afrobeats as Africa’s defining genre.

The highlife crooner urged the media to promote not just Afrobeats but other popular African genres as well.

He said:

“I don’t feel bad when I’m not given credit on the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artiste,”

“What I’m doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artists.

“Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name.”

Glamsquad recalls that Davido criticized the labelling of Afrobeats after Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy recently moved away from the genre.

Speaking on the latest edition of the Business Untitled Podcast, Davido expressed frustration over how all African artists are being “boxed” into the Afrobeats genre, regardless of their unique musical styles.
