Five Nigerian celebrities who have lost their sons

D’banj

Afrobeats singer, Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo better known as D’banj lost his first son in June 2018. According to reports, the 18-month-old christened Daniel Oyebanjo III drowned in their home in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, weeks after celebrating his first birthday in May.

Reacting to his son’s death without making an official statement, D’banj was not in the country when the incident occurred because he attended the BET awards in Los Angeles and shared an encrypted message on his Instagram Page. it reads:

“Trying times. But my God is always and forever faithful.”

In 2019, D’banj and his wife, Lineo Didi Kilgrow welcomed their second child, a girl. Announcing the good news on 1st January 2021, he wrote:

“As I Hold My Daughter, My Own babylet In my Arms On This Day all the proof in God I need is in Her Eyes, you are a gift from the heavens and my God indeed honored His words in Psalms 65:11.

“And to my Beautiful Wife lineo, I watched how you changed by the day and I marvelled at your strength. I couldn’t imagine the stress you had to go through carrying another human in a body. But You taught me what real strength is as you endured every kick and change just to give us our baby girl, while still Taking care of all of us.”

“You are wonderful love and a Rare Gem I’m grateful I get to wake up to you. You have proven yet again that you are unmistakably one of the best gifts God has ever blessed me with.

“I love you.Happy New year .2021 is full of GRACE Zane your Little sister is here!”

 Eucharia Anunobi

Nigerian celebrities who have lost their sons

Nollywood actress, Eucharia Anunobi lost her 15-year-old son, Raymond to the cold hands of death on 22nd August 2017 due to complications arising from sickle cell anaemia.

In an interview on TV Contential,  Anunobi said that although, she had lost her only child, was single with menopause ‘around the corner’, she was still a happy woman, thanks to her faith.

She said:

“I have to be happy, because God tells me that, in all things, we should give Him thanks. And I cannot be saddened because when you grow in God…Growing in God is knowing God’s word and as you know God’s word, His spirit builds you up to the point where you understand that everything on the face of the earth is vanity.

“So, I would actually say, ‘Don’t empathise with me.” Rather, just like the Bible would say, prepare yourself, for calamity will surely befall all of us. So, when it does befall you. Would you be prepared…to carry it?

“For me, I rejoice. I’m happy. I lost my only child. I’m single and it looks like menopause is around the corner and people are like, ‘Oh my God, but she’s happy.’ I’m happy because God says, ‘I will do a new thing.’ God says ‘Restoration is in my hand.”

Davido

Nigerian celebrities who have lost their sons

Afrobeat singer, David Adeleke better known as Davido and his celebrity chef wife (then baby mama) Chioma Rowland lost their only son, Ifeanyi Adeleke on the 31st of October 2023.

According to reports, Ifeanyi got drowned a few days after his birthday which was on October 20  at his father’s residence at Banana Island, Lagos State.

A family source under anonymity said, “The boy was inside water for too long and they pulled him out and rushed him to the hospital”.

He was rushed to Evercare Hospital in Lekki where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The passing of the young champ sent the country into a shock wave as many prayed for the news to be false.

Consequently, Ifeanyi’s death halted his father’s musical plans. However, it also fast-tracked the conjugal bliss between Davido and Chioma following the burial rites to be conducted for their son.

Yul Edochie

Five Nigerian celebrities who have lost their sons

Nollywood actor, Yul Edocdie and his first wife, May, lost their first son Kambilichukwu on 29th March 2023.

According to reports, the deceased was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, 28th March after falling unconscious and has been on medical care.

Reports also have it that Kambilichukwu had spent the entire Tuesday night studying for his exams, which were scheduled for Wednesday. Following the exam, he played a game of football with his friends, during which he suddenly collapsed and experienced a seizure.

He died two months after his birthday.

Mr Ibu

Nollywood actor John Okafor better known as Mr Ibu lost his two-year-old son, Emmanuel Mandela Okafor on 25th January 2012.

The passing of his son left the actor in a profoundly sad state for an extended period. Then on his Facebook page, he shared  a post which reads:

Mr Ibu’s late 2-year-old son

“R.IP. Mandy, my son…Mummy and Daddy love you a lot but God loves you more.”

Aisha Falode

Aisha Falode and her late son Toba

Aisha Falode, an accomplished sports commentator and the Head of the Media Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) suffered a tragic loss on 15th February 2014, when her only son, Oloruntoba, was killed in Dubai. He was 19 years old at the time of his death, and according to reports from Dubai police, he was murdered.
