Fashion Industry Can Support Nigeria's Economy - Experts Explains

With the reduction in the economy of the country, experts have explained the fashion industry can support Nigeria’s Economy. While advocating for investment in the fashion industry, experts have revealed it can boost the country’s GDP. This fact was stated at a press conference held for the forthcoming Lagos Fashion Fair.

The Lagos fashion fair is an annual event held for creative fashion designers to showcase their talent to the international space. This year Lagos fashion fair and the eighth edition of the event is said to commence on September 7 to September 8, 2022.

The Lagos fashion fair is an event created to create an enabling platform for Nigerian designers to connect with international designers to showcase their creativity to the world. The event since its existence is said to have brought together over 1,200 exhibitors and over 18,000 visitors in total.

Lagos fashion seeks to celebrate Nigerian entrepreneurs who have mastered the art of fashion by using it to make bold statements and create more versatility in their designs and brands.” The chief executive of Atlantic Exhibition Limited, Mr. Ayodeji Olugbade explained.

According to him, this year’s fashion fair will be different because it is post covid and the fashion industry has faced a lot of challenges during the pandemic.

Mr. Ayodeji during the press conference also revealed that Lagos fashion week 2022 will be in partnership with Africa Fashion Week Nigeria. According to him, the event will feature a masterclass with renowned Nigerian Designer Toyin Lawani.

He however called on the government’s support for the sector in terms of funding and export process. According to him, most international participants coming to Nigeria for the fair have the support of their governments.

Princess Ronke Ademiluyi, founder of Africa Fashion Week Nigeria during the press conference revealed that fashion is one of the sectors that can be used to sustain economic growth.

“with a focus on using fashion as a non-oil export to grow our GDP, Nigeria’s creative talents can translate into wealth creation,” she explained.

According to Princess Ronke, this year’s fashion week is going to be an awareness program, introducing the designers and channeling them for the export industry. She also added that some of the designers will be chosen to showcase at the Africa Week London in October 2022.

Mr. Ayodeji olugbade also noted that this year’s bumper exhibition packages will feature fashionistas, importers from Europe, Asia exporters, and their Nigerian counterparts with loads of activities. The event will include shopping, musical performance, runway shows, and the celebration of fashion icons.

“Lagos Style Honest has attained over 3,000 exhibitors, 35,000 guests, 35 audio systems, 84 big procurement consumers, 69.9 percent enterprise networking opportunity and 84 per follow up conferences.”
