Fashion History: The history of Michael Kors

In this week’s fashion history, we will be taking a look at the fashion history of Michael Kors. Michael Kors is a multinational fashion holding company founded in 1981 by American designer Michael Kors. The fashion house deals in the sales of ready-to-wear outfits, jewelry, perfume, watches handbags, and accessories.

Michael David Kors (born Karl Anderson Jr.) was born on August 9, 1959. His mother Joan Hamburger was a former model who got married to her second husband Bill kors when her son was five. Michael’s surname was changed to Kors and his mother told him he could choose a new first name as well which explains how the name Michael David Kors came to be in existence.

Michael has been interested in fashion from a very young age. At the age of five, he resigned his mother’s second wedding dress and as a teen began designing clothes and selling them out of his parent’s basement which he renamed the Iron Butterfly. In 1977, Michael enrolled at the fashion institute of Technology in New York City and dropped out only after nine-month. He took a job at a boutique where he started as a salesperson and proceed to become both the designer and visual display head of the store. Four years later, Michael launched his Michael Kors women’s label at Bergdorf Goodman, and in 1990 launched KORS.

A few happening caused him to put the KORS Michael kors line on hold in 1993 and he got back on his feet by 1997. At the same time, he was also named the first women’s ready-to-wear designer for the house of Celine. Michael Kors helped grew Celine with successful accessories and a critically acclaimed ready-to-wear line.

Michael Kors over the years

In 2002, Michael Kors launched his menswear line and left Celine in 2003 to focus on his brand. In 2018, Michael Kors holdings took over Versace. The Italian fashion group was valued at $2.1 billion. After closing the deal, the Michael Kors holding company was renamed to Capri holdings.

Michael Kors has over the years clothed different celebrities and royals. the fashion house also has a kid’s line.
