As we are getting set to enter a new year, we reflect on how the industry has mourned the loss of some great fashion designers. In 2023, the fashion industry mourned the loss of several renowned fashion designers whose innovative and visionary creations had shaped the industry for decades.
Each designer’s demise marked the end of an era, leaving a considerable void in the industry that would undoubtedly be felt for generations to come. Despite their untimely departures, their legacies lived on through their exceptional contributions to the world of fashion design.

Here’s a list of designers we lost:
MARY QUANT
Fashion designer and icon Dame Barbara Mary Quant DBE CH FCSD RDI was a British woman. She played a significant part in London’s Swinging Sixties culture and became a key figure in the 1960s Mod and youth fashion movements. She died 13 April 2023, Surrey, United Kingdom.
JANE BIRKIN
French and British actress and singer Jane Mallory Birkin OBE was born. Because of her ten-year musical and romantic collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg, she gained recognition and notoriety on a global scale. She also had a successful acting career, primarily in French films. She died 16 July 2023, Paris, France.
MARC BOHAN
French fashion designer Roger Maurice Louis Bohan is most known for his thirty years of work at the Dior house. He died 6 September 2023, Châtillon-sur-Seine, France.
DAVID RENNE
Davide Renne was an Italian fashion designer who was the creative director of Moschino after a stint as head of women’s wear at Gucci. He died 7 July 1977, Follonica, Italy.
PACO RABANNE
With his own label, Rabanne established a sustainable and dazzling legacy that aspiring designers can only look up to and imitate.
In his early work, Rabanne repurposed materials like plastic, which he extensively used to create Jane Fonda’s costumes for the 1968 movie Barbarella. His status as one of the forerunners of Space Age fashion was cemented by this. He died 3 February 2023, Portsall, Ploudalmézeau, France.
