Iconic fashion designer, Paco Rabanne has passed away on Friday at his home at Portsall, France. He was 88 years old.

Rabanne was known for his Space Age metal mesh looks worn by celebrities including Jane Fonda, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin.

Spanish company Puig, which controls Rabanne’s fashion and fragrance businesses, confirmed his demise.

“Paco Rabanne made transgression magnetic. Who else could induce fashionable Parisian women to clamor for dresses made of plastic and metal,” said Jose Manuel Albesa, president of Puig’s beauty and fashion division, in a statement.

“That radical, rebellious spirit set him apart: There is only one Rabanne.”

The “enfant terrible” of French fashion, Paco Rabanne began his career designing jewelry for Dior, Balenciaga, and Givenchy before establishing his own label in 1966.

His first collection was titled “12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials,” and it included a number of avant-garde plastic ensembles.
