The family of the late music icon, Onyeka Onwenu has disclosed the funeral arrangement.
Glamsquad reported that Onyeka passed away on the night of 30th July 2024. She had performed at the 80th birthday celebration of her friend, Stella Okolie, the founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
A week after her passing, the family has broken their silence regarding her burial arrangements. While receiving a delegation from the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) at the singer’s Ikoyi, Lagos residence, the family disclosed that she would be laid to rest as soon as possible.
Although no specific date has been announced, Onwenu’s sons shared their intention to bury their late mother before the end August. They mentioned that the full burial arrangements would be revealed in the coming days.
In other news, Onyeka revealed her desire for a simple, quiet, and private farewell, free from excess celebration in a 2021 opinion piece in Premium Times.
Onyeka admonished her loved ones to mourn her demise modestly, focusing on celebrating her life through prayers, light-hearted moments, and joyful memories. She emphasized the importance of honoring her while she was still alive, so she could share in the celebration.
The ‘Iyogogo’ crooner also spoke out against the extravagant displays of wealth often seen at Nigerian burials, contrasting her wishes with the lavish funeral of Obi Cubana’s mother. She called for more modest and meaningful ways to honour the deceased.
