Exploring the Life of Peter Edochie, the Living Legend of Nollywood

Nollywood veteran actor, Chief Pete Edochie fondly referred to as the Lion of Africa or Ebubedike a force to reckon with having spent over forty years in the movie industry.

Edochie is a film producer, philanthropist, entrepreneur, investor and television personality born on 7th March 1947 in Coal City of Enugu State in the southeastern part of Nigeria. He is originally from Anambra State.

Education and early life

Pete Edochie had his primary school education in Enugu state and obtained his First Schol Leaving certificate. He completed his secondary school education in Northern Nigeria, specifically at St. Patrick’s College Zaria, Kaduna State and obtained his West African  Senior School Certificate. During his school days, he was actively involved in drama club where he featured in several stage plays.

After completing his education, he worked for the Nigerian Railway Corporation before becoming a junior programme assistant at the Eastern Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation in the late 1960s. Edochie later pursued a journalism and television course at the School of Journalism and Television in London.

In 1967, Edochie made his acting debut in the Nigerian television drama series ‘The Village Masquerade,’ produced by the Eastern Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation. He rose to prominence in the Nigerian entertainment industry when he played the lead role of ‘Okonkwo’ in the 1987 adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s novel ‘Things Fall Apart.’

Following his breakthrough, Edochie went on to act in numerous movies and television series for over 40 years. His career includes over 100 movies, including popular films like ‘Igodo,’ ‘Mark of the Beast,’ ‘The Greatest Weapon,’ and ‘Lionheart.’

Edochie is recognized for his exceptional acting skills and his talent for bringing his characters to life. He has a distinctive style that has won the hearts of audiences, and his deep voice has become synonymous with his acting.

Pete Edochie has won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. some of them are listed below:

  • 1999 Movie Personality of the Year by the City People Magazine
  • 2001 Censors’ Board award for the Best Actor in Africa
  • 2003 Censors’ Board award for the Best Actor in Nigeria
  • Industry Merit Award at the 2014 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards
  • Life Impact Award at the 2017 Times Heroes Awards
  • Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2003 Africa Movie Academy Awards
  • Member of the Order of the Niger Award given by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003.

Pete Edochie’s family

The Legend got married to his happily married to his heartthrob, Josephine Edochie in 1969 at the age of 22. They have six children together – Eva, Yul, Gene, Lincoln, Uche, and Leo; two of who followed in their father’s footsteps.

They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on 2nd October 2022.
