Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Eniola Alao has recalled how she nearly resorted to self-harm due to the impact of fake news on social media.
In a recent interview with Nollywood on Radio, Eniola narrated the painful experience caused by false rumors on social media that deeply affected her mental health.
She admitted that the impact of these lies was so overwhelming that she almost considered poisoning herself. She further noted it was one of the hardest times she had ever faced; the distress kept her from eating or leaving her home for seven days.
Eniola further recalled how her sisters noticed her struggle and constantly reached out, pleading with her not to harm herself and reminding her to take care of her own well-being.
Her son also took action, contacting family members to alert them to the toll that these untrue stories were taking on her.
She said,
“I almost poisoned myself because of news about me on social media that was far from true. It was the first time in my life to faced something so painful that I couldn’t eat for seven days. I didn’t go anywhere. People around me can testify to it.
“My sisters were calling, telling me, ‘You have to do this for yourself. You don’t have to poison yourself.’ My son was reaching out to everyone that I was struggling with the online lies.”
