Davido fires back at TVC hosts, critics over statement on Nigeria’s economy

Award-winning music sensation Davido has finally broken his silence amid the intense backlash and criticism surrounding his recent interview.

Glamsquad reported that Davido in a viral interview, Davido issued a strong warning to Black Americans contemplating a move to Africa, urging them to reconsider due to the continent’s economic challenges. He later clarified that his comments were not intended to disparage Africa but to focus on its brighter sides while steering attention away from its less glamorous realities.

His remarks sparked widespread disapproval, drawing criticism from notable figures like Reno Omokri, Patrick Doyle, Akashat Nymat, and others.

Taking to the micro-blogging platform, X, the 2025 Grammy nominee asserted that the backlash stems from envy, claiming he is the true ambassador. He further praised his own performance, highlighting the sophistication and refinement of his accent during the interview.

“Y’all mad ’cause we the Real Ambassadors. The way my accent be for that interview dey sweet me. Very demure. Lmao @tvcng nah today?”.

Recall that Reno Omokri criticized Davido’s remarks, questioning how the economy could be in shambles when Wizkid’s new album, Morayo, broke streaming records on Spotify Nigeria.

He urged Davido to verify his claims, emphasizing that people in a truly struggling economy wouldn’t have the disposable income to support such milestones.

TVC Your View presenter Nymat questioned Davido’s contributions to the masses, pointing out that American celebrities rarely criticize their country to outsiders. Similarly, Akashat advised the singer to exercise caution in his statements, particularly regarding the nation that catapulted him to fame.

Paulo defends Davido

Nigerian show promoter, has stepped up to defend music star Davido amidst the backlash over his remark about Africa’s economy being in shambles.

Paul Okoye urged critics to back off, agreeing that the singer spoke the truth. He highlighted Nigeria’s dire economic situation, citing the exodus of global companies and the significant losses plaguing local businesses.

He emphasized the obvious challenges the country is facing and urged Nigerians to confront reality, encouraging them to focus on building a better future.

“Please make una leave Davido alone, mad people. Davido spoke the truth Nigeria’s current economic state is so bad. With global companies leaving and local businesses facing significant losses, it’s clear we are facing challenges. Let’s acknowledge the reality and work towards a better future. God bless Nigeria”.
