emininity is back in a big way this season, thanks to the influx of ruffles on the runways. Fashion editors have already coined the term ‘cake dress’ to describe the frothy, frilly creations comprised of multiple layers of delicious-looking fabric.
Most notably, Marc Jacobs’ standout Spring Summer 2019 show included voluminous ruffled blouses in pink and peach, as well as can-can-girl-style dresses rendered in feathers and sequins. Up-and-coming designer Molly Goddard, who counts Rihanna as a fan, also had a love affair with ruffled tulle and gingham gowns. Meanwhile, wearable romantic blouses were seen at Coach 1941, Zimmermann and Gucci – perfect for pairing with a pair of understated tailored trousers.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley made this fresh-off-the-runway look her own at the Daily Front Row Fashion Awards. With the help of stylist Emma Jade Morrison, the British model put a spin on this Autumn Winter 2019 Oscar de la Renta asymmetrical ruffled silk taffeta blouse by teaming it with tapered trousers and a barely-there shoe. It’s a lesson in modern-day cocktail party style.
One for the boysFacial Exfoliant Paste
While it’s Lent and everyone is giving up their vices, why not take up something: regularly exfoliating. Despite our increased appreciation of male grooming, there’s still so many men who are unsure of what a cleanse-tone-moisturise routine entails. This second exfoliating step is vital for staving off breakouts, banishing dead skin cells and allowing other products work more effectively. This one – which is gender neutral – with rosemary, evening primrose and lavender does a great job and is suitable for all skin types… just watch out that your significant other/sister/female roommate doesn’t swipe it! Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste, €43, aesop.com.
Top Tip
If you’re wary of ruffles, consider delving into one of the most popular ways to work them into your wardrobe: frilly cuffs and collars. Multiple designers played with these regal Elizabethan-style detailings on dresses and blouses. By the looks of the autumn winter collections, it’s a micro trend that’s here to stay too – so keep an eye out for pieces that incorporate them.
