‘Coming 2 America’ Dominates 2022 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Awards

The 9th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, held on Saturday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, were led by “Coming 2 America.” The Eddie Murphy comedy, in which makeup is employed to convert Murphy and Arsenio Hall into a variety of personalities, won three awards in the five feature-film categories, including modern make-up, special make-up effects, and current hair style.

“Cruella,” which won for period and/or character make-up, and “Being the Ricardos,” which won for period and/or character hair styling, received the other two film prizes.

Along with “Dune,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and “House of Gucci,” “Coming 2 America” and “Cruella” are nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscars. Since the MUAHS restarted its awards in 2013, no film has won an Oscar for makeup without first receiving a MUAHS award.

(However, even if they agree on winners, they vary on spelling: the Oscars call the category makeup and hairstyling, but the guild hyphenates the first and separates the second.)
