The unexpected shutdown of TikTok in the United States has sent ripples across the entertainment world, leaving international celebrities and millions of users in shock.
American rapper, Cardi B and such as Nigerian celebrities such as Omoborty, Opeyemi Aiyeola, and Jigan Babaoja have joined the chorus of voices expressing their frustration and disappointment over the ban, highlighting its wide-reaching impact on creators and fans alike.
TikTok was abruptly taken offline on Saturday night after the Supreme Court upheld a bipartisan law mandating the app be sold to a U.S.-based or allied buyer. The decision has left over 170 million American users stranded, sparking widespread concern and uncertainty.
The law, signed by outgoing President Joe Biden in April, was presented as a measure to address national security concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ownership. However, the move has ignited heated debate, with critics accusing the government of prioritizing politics over the cultural and economic opportunities the app provided to millions of users.
TikTok has been instrumental in amplifying Cardi B’s music to a broader audience, making the platform’s shutdown a significant disruption. However, Cardi didn’t stay silent when critics spoke out.
When a user on X suggested that rappers relying on TikTok for promotion should “find alternative jobs,” Cardi swiftly responded, stating that she doesn’t need TikTok to earn money or maintain her relevance.
Nollywood Yoruba actress, Biodun Okeowo, better known as Omoborty, shared her feelings in an emotional Instagram post, describing TikTok as her “safe space” during difficult times.
She revealed that the app had been a source of solace and happiness, offering an outlet for creativity and laughter when she needed it most.
She wrote;
“I can’t believe I’m literally emotional about the TikTok ban in the US. I don’t make money on TikTok, but this app was the major app that helped me through heartbreak in 2021, and I still use it anytime my mood is low.
“This is no exaggeration. I’m genuinely close to tears right now. I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but I’m really going to miss TikTok.”
Actress, Opeyemi Aiyeola expressed her disappointment in an Instagram post, mourning the loss of a platform that had become a daily staple for both creators and fans.
The mother of two noted that TikTok was more than just an app—it was a vibrant community, a source of support, and a lifeline during times of uncertainty and upheaval.
She wrote, “Waking up to this really hurts walahi 💔🥲. I feel for all the beautiful-hearted people who used the platform positively. Stay positive 🇺🇸 ❤️.”
Nigerian actor Jigan Babaoja, currently residing in the U.S., expressed his disappointment over the TikTok ban, revealing how it has disrupted his daily routine.
“How a king of TikTok has been dethroned! Now, let the boredom begin. O ti da! Pitipiti is that you? E double Tap! Drop the boosting gloves on the X3, E gbe like yen de 1m likes.”
