The story of Mayowa Ahmed, you will agree can be likened to a tragic flash fiction.
A few weeks ago, the internet literally broke with pleas for support in the form of cash donations to help save Mayowa; and in 4 days, it was reported that Nigerians from all works of lives donated over 34 million to the course and everyone was happy on how we promptly came to the rescue of one of our own….but not for long.
News broke a few days later that the whole Save Mayowa Campaign was fraud and the leader of the campaign, Toyin Aimakhu was caught up in a needless confrontation with Mayowa’s family.
The case was so much that it resulted in the police freezing the account where the funds were deposited, thereby delaying the proposed treatments of poor Mayowa.
After the police unfroze the account, there was another controversy as regards the country where she was suppose to go for treatment. A cross sectioned of Nigerians questioned why the family had chosen to send her to Dubai against the initial arrangement of sending her to the United States of America for treatment.
Finally, she was sent to South Africa on August 11th (yes, not USA and not Dubai) where she died yesterday.
The sad tale that trailed the last days of Mayowa’s life is indeed one of many lessons, proving to us once again, that there really is nothing in this world but shadows; and we pray that her departed soul, rest in peace, amen.
