Gordon Lightfoot, a Canadian legend and a “rare talent,” as Bob Dylan once put it, was a folk singer-songwriter who passed suddenly on Monday in Toronto. He was 84.
Representative Victoria Lord said that Lightfoot passed away early on Tuesday in a Toronto hospital, but she would not go into further detail about his cause of death. Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, paid tribute to the musician right away on Twitter.

“We have lost one of our greatest singer-songwriters,” Trudeau wrote. “Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape. May his music continue to inspire future generations, and may his legacy live on forever.”
Lightfoot won 17 times at the Canadian equivalent, the Juno award, and received five Grammy nominations over the course of his career.
