The luxury fashion label Chanel has officially appointed Matthieu Blazy as its new Creative Director. Matthieu is the first external hire for this iconic role since Karl Lagerfeld took the position in 1983. Blazy is expected to create 10 collections annually in fashion, couture, and accessories for the great french brand.
The 40 year old French- Belgian designer has a rich work history with some of the best fashion houses in the world. His time at Bottega Veneta had just come to a close a few weeks prior to his new appointment at Chanel.
The talented designer was discovered early in his career by none other than Raf Simmons. In 2011, he took on the role of designer at Maison Margiela where his work continued inspire and record great success.
The eye-catching encrusted mask worn by Kanye West during his massive “Yeezus” tour in 2013 was designed by Blazy himself. As a testament to the value of his creations, the black tiled mask worn by Kanye has now been listed on the “Grailed” online fashion marketplace for the cool price of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000).

The collection of masks served as a symbol of a pivotal moment in music history that launched Kanye into the realm of megastardom.
From November 2014 through to the year 2019, Matthieu Blazy made his mark at Phoebe Philo, Celine and Calvin Klein. His excellent work as the design director of women’s ready- to- wear at Calvin Klein is considered by many to have been the sign of greater things to come. At Calvin Klein, he worked once again under the guidance of the great Raf Simmons who had initially discovered and hired him on the spot after viewing his graduate collection.
On his personal instagram page, Blazy announced his new position and wrote:
“I am thrilled and honoured to join the wonderful House of Chanel, I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together”
Blazy’s highly anticipated debut collection is billed to premiere in October 2025.
