Booker Prize winning novelist and author of Wolf Hall Dame Hilary Mantel is dead

Dame Hilary Mantel, the Booker Prize-winning novelist and author of the Wolf Hall trilogy, has died at the age of 70, glamsquad reports

Her literary agents, 4th Estate Books, announced the news on Twitter today.

 

“We are deeply saddened by the death of our beloved author, Dame Hilary Mantel, and our hearts go out to her friends and family, particularly her husband, Gerald. This is a tragic loss, and we can only be grateful that she left us with such a magnificent body of work “The tweet continues.

 

Dame Hilary was best known for her historical trilogy Wolf Hall, which was later adapted for television and turned into a hit West End

 

Dame Hilary was awarded the Man Booker Prize twice, for Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies, which also won the Costa Book of the Year in 2012.

The conclusion to her groundbreaking research The Mirror and the Light, the first book in the Wolf Hall Trilogy, was released in 2020 to widespread acclaim. It was an instant number one fiction best-seller, was longlisted for The Booker Prize 2020, and won the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, which she had previously won for Wolf Hall.

 

According to HarperCollins, the trilogy, which follows Thomas Cromwell’s rise and fall in King Henry VIII’s court, has been translated into 41 languages and has sold more than five million copies worldwide.

 

It was later adapted for the stage and screen, with the Royal Shakespeare Company staging productions of the first two books in 2013, and The Mirror & the Light, adapted by Dame Hilary, being staged in London in 2021, with Ben Miles playing Cromwell.

 

The BBC also adapted the story into a TV series, which premiered on BBC Two in 2015 and won three Baftas and a Golden Globe for Sir Mark Rylance as Cromwell.

 

Following the announcement of her death, tributes have poured in for the author.
