Career
In 2017, Aproko Doctor started sharing health and wellness tips on digital platforms after recognizing that many Nigerians were experiencing preventable ailments due to unhealthy lifestyles. His motivation stemmed from encountering individuals falling into this category during his university days in Awka.
Believing that social media offered the easiest way to reach a broad audience, he aimed to make a positive impact. Over time, by sharing bite-sized, informative health content on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, Aproko Doctor’s social media presence has grown significantly, leading to numerous brand endorsements and partnerships.
As a medical doctor, Aproko Doctor has collaborated with health organizations such as the Red Cross Society through volunteer services and participated in various health campaigns. Balancing his role as a doctor with that of a social media content creator and influencer, he is also the founder of The Healthy Threads—a lifestyle brand committed to ensuring the well-being of the sick in society.
Currently, Aproko Doctor holds the role of executive director at The 100k Club, a non-profit organization in Nigeria with the vision of eradicating health poverty in Nigeria and Africa. The club’s objective is to encourage Nigerians to set aside a minimum of N500 monthly to help provide access to quality healthcare for those unable to afford their medical expenses.
Having put in effort to reach millions of Nigerians, Aproko Doctor is convinced that his health advocacy on social media has increased awareness about the advantages of embracing a healthy lifestyle.
Beyond his roles as a medical doctor and health content creator, Dr. Egemba has ventured into acting. His debut in the Netflix-acquired movie “Strain,” directed by Uduak-Obong Patrick, marks a new chapter in his career.
Beginning of Aproko Doctor
In an interview with The Guardian Life, Aproko mentioned how his health content on social media has inspired many users to enhance their lifestyles. He discussed his journey in creating one of Nigeria’s leading health content platforms.
“While a student, I got to see hundreds of people in ill health, most of these diseases could be prevented if only they knew how to. Others would return worse after listening to the doctor and it occurred to me that they did not understand fully the gravity of the situation. I decided to take it upon myself to teach them about their health and general well-being starting from the young population. People spend a huge chunk of their time on social media so I took the message to them. Hence the beginning of the Project: Aproko Doctor.”
Personal Life
Despite not putting his personal life on social media, his fans and followers celebrated his marital union in a special way.
In June 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Egemba tied the knot with Chiamaka Nwakalor, a chef and food content creator on Instagram, Twitter & YouTube. She is the CEO of an online food delivery service in Lagos named Dish L’Afrique.
Health Challange
In January 2023, Aproko Doctor opened up about his health battle with a brain tumour.
In a video shared on his social media platforms, he detailed how he was diagnosed and his journey to recovery. Captioning the post, he wrote
“Throughout December of 2022, I was fighting for my life. I went blind in one eye on the 3rd of December 2022 and on the 5th, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour.”
Speaking in the video, he said,
“One thing to understand is that health issues can happen to you regardless of who you are including me. “For the past three weeks or two weeks, I have been fighting for my life. Some of you have no idea. It happened that I was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma which is a brain tumour and I had no idea I would be sharing my story.
“Here I am sitting on this seat sharing my own story about how I had a tumour in my brain. It was so bad that I couldn’t read out of my phone anymore to the point where this eye, I couldn’t read with it and it was also closing. They said it is a Craniopharyngioma and we need to do surgery to remove it.”
