If not Cristóbal Balenciaga’s shapes, this was the creative director of Balenciaga’s most rebellious haute couture collection yet, rejecting the formality and fineries typical of the metier. Demna adopted the designer’s 3/4-length sleeves, cocoon shapes, and ornate headwear. However, he did so by using materials from his own practice over the past ten years, such as leather, denim, track suits, technical outerwear, and hoodies, of course, bonding them to a satin scuba material that enabled him to achieve his sculpted forms, rather than Balenciaga’s use of gazar and other fabrics.
These pieces asked you to reconsider the ways in which we ascribe value to clothing and why we consider one thing and not the other to be precious—provocative questions in a world with too much stuff. The final design was a whirling mass of black nylon that was picked out specifically to represent Cristóbal’s priceless gazar. This unique piece of “ephemeral couture” was built right before the show and will be assembled by three Balenciaga employees for the buyer.
Overall, the Fall 2024 Couture Collection showcases Balenciaga’s ability to blend artistry with wearability, making it a must-see for fashion enthusiasts around the world.
