Australian comedian, Barry Humphries, best known as Dame Edna Everage, dies aged 89

Barry Humphries, an Australian comedian best known for his alter-ego, Dame Edna Everage, passed away at the age of 89.

“He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,” his family said in a statement.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the star was readmitted to the hospital on Wednesday due to complications from hip surgery last month.

Following a fall in February, Humphries underwent hip replacement surgery.

Humphries appeared in a number of TV talk shows, specials, and movies during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s under the guises of Dame Edna, Les Patterson, and Sandy Stone, including The Dame Edna Experience in 1987.

Humphries is survived by his wife, Lizzie Spender and four children.
