Alleged human trafficking: Sonia Ekweremadu appears in UK court: Sonia Ekweremadu, the daughter of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, appeared in court on Monday on charges of trafficking a homeless man into the United Kingdom in order to harvest his organs for herself.
According to the Daily Mail, she was also charged with conspiring to arrange another person’s travel with the intention of exploitation.
Along with her father, 60, mother, 56-year-old Beatrice Ekweremadu, and 50-year-old doctor Obinna Obeta, Ms. Ekweremadu is accused of the crimes.
The trial date for Ms. Ekweremadu has been set for January 31, 2023, but she has not yet entered a plea.
She and the other people allegedly helped the man travel from Lagos to London so that one of his kidneys could be removed, according to the prosecution.
The court was informed that Ms. Ekweremadu has a kidney condition and has been receiving dialysis for a while.
The young man, who had previously lived on the streets of Lagos, showed up at Staines Police Station on June 21 and claimed to be a victim of trafficking. Ekweremadu and his wife were then detained.
Officers were informed by the man that he had arrived in the UK on February 20 of this year and that he had been taken to the Royal Free Hospital for tests, none of which he had agreed to.
After these tests, the man claimed to have returned to the home where he had been staying, where he was “treated effectively as a slave,” according to The Daily Mail.
Before approaching the police, he claimed to have left the address and been homeless for three days.
