The renowned DJ stated that he and his wife brought Afrobeats to American audiences by releasing a video of themselves dancing to Wizkid’s songs when the genre was not yet popular in the country.
He also revealed that he brought Burna Boy to the United States by giving him a stage to play in front of an audience before he began popping nationwide.
Swizz Beats announced this on the most recent episode of Amazon Music’s audiovisual podcast Roundtable.
“I introduced Wizkid to America,” he stated. I was the first to perform his music. On a trip with my wife [Alicia Keys], we danced to his songs.
“I was also the first to bring Burna Boy to the United States.” On stage, I introduced him. People thought I was being too African when I was playing Fela Kuti. And how naive the energy was at the time. But that didn’t stop me from moving what I’m moving because that’s what it is. It is all about education. We [Americans] cannot be afraid of an educational experience that sounds or feels different.
