African Fashion Week London 2019 – DAY ONE HIGHLIGHT

An afternoon of rain of near biblical proportions did not stop an enthusiastic crowd who turned out to witness Africa Fashion Week London 2019’s opening shows and new format.

The public were invited to “Experience Africa” with a meandering Souk Marketplace; a fascinating Business Fashion Forum; a Luxury Boutique; a Food Hall and, of course, the now-famous AFWL Catwalk Shows.

The 6pm show on Day 1 was full of surprises.  Having the 4pm show full of South African sunshine, the catwalk refreshed with designs from Rwanda, Botswana, Guinea Bissau and Nigeria.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – SHERAH
A stunning debut collection from first-time designer Sherah.  Bridal trousseau, silks, satins, lace and tulle made up this beautiful piece of work.  A one to watch.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – MUHIRE
Born in Belgium and raised in Rwanda, Muhire’s best description is a fusion between European influences, and African culture tribal aesthetics. Flowing silhouettes celebrate contradictions and similarities between the two.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – O’SAUNDERS
Nigerian favourite O’Saunders made a statement on the African Fashion Week Nigeria catwalk in 2016.  He made another statement for the first time at Africa Fashion Week London for 2019.  Evocative of Spring and Summer, this blooms and butterflies collection was a breath of fresh air.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – FASHION CANTE
Hailing from Guinea Bissau,  Fashion Canté head designer, Alfa Umaro Cante’s use of eccentric African prints and colours are all based around his native roots and culture.  Floor-length cloaks and elegant lines; men’s flared tunic made this AFWL first time designer a crowd favourite.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – PRELIM
Last year Zimbabwean designer Prelim wowed us with Ndebele  print bikinis and thigh-high boots.  This year she wowed us with a new collection of menswear.  Urban styling, the Ndebele print featured once again in bomber jackets, reversible bucket hats and shoulder bumbags.  Matching accessories are a signature of this designer.  Bang on trend and a hugely wearable collection.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – DAVIVA PRESENTS ARAEWA
Wax print giant Daviva again brought Nigerian designer, Araewa.   Previously hosting Araewa in 2016, the designer brought another colourful collection.  Flowing Skirts turned into cigarette pants, regal off-shoulder bustiers – all beautifully fitted to the form and signature to the brand.
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – THABIED
Blue moods were giving the catwalk life!  Botswana designer Thabied gave us a beautiful collection full of classic styles – knee-length skirts with overcoats and matching hair ties.  A feathered jumpsuit and a beautiful chiffon off-shoulder dress were the highlights of this collection
FRIDAY 9 AUGUST, 6PM – ILE MOREMI
Forever welcoming designer Ile Moremi to the catwalk.  Signature designs from AFWL founder, Princess Ronke Ademiluyi.  Brought from Nigeria, these designs are part of the heritage collection of the Ooni of Ife’s charitable foundation,  House of Oduduwa Foundation.  The foundation has an ongoing commitment to serve humanity and is a vocal advocate for the less privileged.
