Adele’s Weight Loss Is None Of Our Business, Says Charli Howard

Begin typing the word ‘Adele’ into Google, and the words “weight loss” will pop up before you’ve even had a chance to hit the search button.

Forget the fact that she’s a mother, a Grammy winner 15 times over, the recipient of an Oscar and a Golden Globe, or that she broke the record for the fastest selling US album ever (not bad, considering the majority of these accomplishments were racked up before she turned 30), to many, it seems, the thing that really defines Adele’s success is how much she weighs.

Discussing other people’s weight loss is complex for a number of reasons. For one, it reinforces the message that being thin is something to celebrate – that thinness is the key to happiness, beauty and success.

We don’t consider whether said person might have lost weight due to stress, depression, bereavement, an underlying medical condition, an eating disorder, or a million other reasons. It emphasises the view that, above all else, a woman’s worth boils down to her looks.
