In 2011, Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo released a song that has gone down in history as a unifying factor especially during elections that sought to divide citizens because of ethnic affiliations.

The song titled “Great Nation” can be said to be one of the most unifying songs in a country that is diverse in ethnic and religious affiliations.

“Great Nations” calls for Nigerians to unite and build a nation they can be proud of. The popular verse in the song says:

“We’re all we have
We’ll defend our land
We believe in this nation
And we know we’ll get there
We’re all we have
We’ll defend our land
We believe in Nigeria
And the promise she holds
And that one day we’ll shine like the sun
We’re a great nation”

Timi Dakolo also touched on significant questions in the nation regarding the diverse tribes and tongues:

“Though we are many people
Different tribes
Different tongues
We’re united in our strength and resolve
To uphold the honour of our land
And for generations to come
And for generations to come”

Timi Dakolo revealed the motivation behind the over 10-year-old song in a Showtime interview in 2022, stating:

“The inspiration behind ‘Great Nation’ is my love for Nigeria…, letting Nigerians know that we need to make this country work and we can only do it together.”

As Nigerians troop to the polls on Saturday, February 25, 2023, for the presidential elections, they must remember lines from this song and make the right decision with their Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC).

Nigerians must not allow ethnic sentiments and religious leanings to blind their choice of candidates. Like Timi Dakolo said, “We’re united in our strength and resolve.” It is time to save Nigeria from bad leadership by voting for the right candidates.
