The second best-selling song of all time is “Shape of You,” performed by British singer Ed Sheeran. About 42 million copies of the song were sold. The song also broke a record for the most digital downloads sold at the same time. Along with fellow British composers Steve Mac and Johnny McDaid, Sheeran co-wrote the song. After being released in January 2017, the song quickly gained popularity. The song received a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

3. “ DESPACITO“ by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee

In January 2017, the third most popular song in history was also released. Spanish for “slowly” or “softly,” “Despacito” first gained popularity in Latin America before becoming global in the summer of 2017. Around 38 million copies of the song were sold globally. The song was written by Panamanian singer Erika Ender, Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee, and Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi (actual name Luis Rodriguez). The first two recorded and published the song, which swiftly rose to the top of the Latin Pop song charts.

4. “ CANDLE IN THE WIND” by Elton John

“Candle in the Wind” by Elton John is the fourth most popular song of all time. The British singer and fellow British writer Bernie Taupin co-wrote the song’s original lyrics in 1973. Originally, it was meant as a tribute to American singer-actress Marlyn Monroe. Back then, the original song was already well-known.

Elton John sang the new version of the song at Lady Diana Spencer’s funeral in 1997, after John and Taupin had rewritten and re-recorded it. This fresh tribute to the adored princess became a worldwide sensation and sold over 33 million copies. As a double A-side, the single in some nations also featured the song “Something About the Way You Look Tonight.”

The fifth-most-sold song in music history is “In the Summertime.” The song was published in 1970 by the British rock group Mungo Jerry, whose lead singer was Raymond Dorset. 31 million copies of the skiffle song were sold worldwide.
