Tolani Otedola on  Her Love for Music and Fashion

The first daughter of Nigerian billionaire, Tolani Otedola, is set on coming into the Nigerian music industry to get back what is hers but music is not just the only fancy that rocks in Tolani’s boat; her love for comfortable fashion is also felt in her music. All these, she revealed to Linda Orajekwe, of Vanguard Allure.

How would you describe yourself as an artist and a woman?

If Sade Adu, Prince, Stephen Tyler, Fela Kuti and Amy Winehouse lived in a commune in the middle of nowhere, I would be their adopted love child. Haha!

What’s fashion to you?

Hmm! It’s hard to put into words, but if I had to choose, I would say expression and fantasy. From being barefoot on stage with silky flowing trousers as I do to buying tracksuits from the men’s section because they are mad comfortable – it’s all about how I feel and how I want to express myself in a moment.

How would you describe your style?

I’m pretty comfortable; I don’t take styling too seriously. I like to dress up and go all out when the occasion is right.  But for the most part, I’m pretty laid back. I like what I like – not because it’s fashionable but because it makes me feel good.

What’s beauty to you and what beauty product can you not do without?

I think there’s beauty in simplicity. I think there’s beauty in imperfection – birthmarks, stretch marks, scars that tell a story. I cannot do without my lip balm – dry lips are never okay for me.

What’s your perception of the Nigerian music industry before and now?

The industry is fascinating. I feel like it has grown at an insane speed over the last couple of years. And, I love how different sounds and styles of music are emerging. It’s a good time to be a Nigerian artiste; I’ll say that.

What influenced your decision to go into music? And, how long have you been doing it?

I don’t think I ever really decided to go into music if you know what I mean… I didn’t choose it. I think I was born as a musical being and it was inevitable. I’ve been singing and making music in some form or another for as long as I can remember. But I’ve been on this wave of creativity since I met my current team about two years ago. It’s great; we are having a good time.

How easy do you think it will be for you to break into the Nigerian music industry?

I think that in some ways, the Nigerian music industry is under-estimated – people assume that it’s rigid and non-receptive to new or different music. I don’t think that’s the case. I believe that the Nigerian industry likes good music and if I can continue putting out good music, I think I’ll be alright… I’m optimistic.

How would you say your style has enhanced your brand?

No one can do you better than you. So, yeah, my style, has an impact on the overall development of my brand.

How would you describe your eating habit?

Like a raging fire! Lol. I like food. But I know it’s important to be healthy, so I try. But a secret fantasy of mine is that for a short while I could be one of those super morbidly obese people that need a crane to leave their house! I could just eat WHATEVER I wanted for a whole week! Haha. But for now, give me a bowl of amala, gbegiri, ewedu, beef stew and cold water. Life is good!

Do you exercise? What kind of exercise?

I do. I am a little obsessed with boxing! It’s a total body work out and an incredibly efficient way to let off steam; not to mention that it keeps bad boys away! Haha.

How do you relax?

I love a hot bath! I like to light some nice smelling candles, turn on irokoTV and find a nice dramatic Yoruba movie with loads of love, crying and proverbs. Lol. Then, I just sit in the bath and enjoy!

How do you keep your skin looking this good and what’s your beauty regime?

I drink a lot of water! I have this great app that reminds me to drink water throughout the day – I get through at least 3 litres a day. It does mean that I’ve got to go the bathroom all the time like I’m pregnant! Lol. But that’s a small price to pay for good skin. My regime is the classic combo of cleansing, tone and moisturise – just like my mummy taught me.

Where’s your ideal vacation spot?

I haven’t been around the world yet, but the top of my bucket list for Africa is Kenya – Kenyan Safari sounds incredible!

What are you passionate about in life?

Man, life is short! Shorter than we realise until it’s too late! So I try to be passionate about everything I do, especially my music. I try to give every moment – the good, the bad and the ugly – my full attention.

What’s your watchword in life?

Casio. Lol

One life rule you try to live by?

Life rule: when the music hits, you don’t feel any pain.
