WHAT WE MISS: Goldie

goldie

Since the beginning of time, the people of the world have been defined as social animals. We like to interract, go out, dance, sing. We like the good things of life. One of the key things that has kept man all these years, that we like to keep up with, that we like to keep on-key with, is music. Strums of a harp, guitar, keys on a piano, bass drums to drown out our thoughts, we love it all.

To get away from it all, to lift our spirits or to just generally chill, music has always been it. The solution.

Every time we lose a soul, a special soul that played a big role in music, we grieve like we lost our sisters, our friends, even if we barely knew them. On the 14th of February, 2013, Valentines day, Nigeria lost a great artiste. Susan Oluwabimpe ‘Goldie’ Harvey, succumbed to an ‘Intracerebral hemorrhage’ caused by ‘Hpertensive Heart Disease’. On a day where hearts and butterflies rule, Nigeria grieved, Africa grieved.

Goldie had just returned from the 2013 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, when she, in the company of her best friend and popular Nigerian Tv Host, Denrele Edun, complained of a headache. The headache that took her life. Prior to the event, Goldie had recorded some smashing singles and had even participated in the Big Brother Africa Star Game Show. In the big brother house, we saw a side to the dynamic artiste that we had never seen before. Her calm nature, despite the crazy way she appeared in her music videos, her big heart that only ever seemed to see the good in people and a show of modesty that left us dumbfounded, Goldie was indeed a rear gem, we were so sad to hear of her demise.

In Honour of her, her music, her life, on the 14th of February, 2014, Nigeria celebrated the life of a real icon. What better way to do that, than by finally premiering her last and final song and video on almost every channel. Yes, ever passionate, with all that was going on in Goldies life before her demise, she still put her fans first. She recorded a song ‘ Give it to me’ featuring popular artiste ‘ J. Martins’. The video as always, is of the best quality and shows her in her element. Happy, free, everything she always was.

It feels like just yesterday, but how time flies. It is safe to say that Goldie was well-liked among her people and in death, it would seem that her memory lives on. Today, we recognise this woman. We recognise Goldie Hrvey, for recognising the gift of entertainment that God bestowed upon her and using it for good.

I speak for music lovers everywhere in Nigeria, when I say; ‘May Her Soul, Rest in Peace’. Let the people say Amen.
