MAKE UP TIPS WITH MARCO LOUIS

Marco Louis is a 28 year old South African based in Nigeria.  He represents MAC Cosmetics as the Resident Senior Artist for Sub Saharan Africa.  We got the fabulous opportunity to sit down with him and talk all things makeup, trends for the season and dos and don’ts.

What are the makeup trends for the season and how do we customize them for the Nigerian woman?

Just Like silhouettes or skirt lengths in fashion, so too makeup changes every season.  MAC cosmetics spend a great deal of time on fashion platforms internationally deciphering and creating trends that perfectly suit the world of makeup for the season to come.  Four trends can be seen for each SS and AW time annually.  The base for each of these trends always tends to be the skin.  The skin this season is pure lux.  We will see a huge play on youthful, dewy healthy looking skin.  The secret to this lies solely in the preparation and care.  Many women omit using moisturizer and tend to head straight into makeup.  If you spend more time treating and preparing your skin for makeup, the results will look flawless and effortless.

What are the most common mistakes women make with makeup application?

Globally we still see foundation matching to be acommon difficulty.  The trick to this really is to pay attention to all the different tones that lie, not only in the face but also neck and shoulder area.  To synchronize these areas is ideally what we must achieve.  Sometimes this requires more than one foundation or concealer.  But the end result will reveal a flawless look that will serve to enhance your true beauty.

How will the woman at home achieve professional makeup results without having an artist hidden in their closets?

Professional results can easily be achieved if one understands your needs with regard to makeup and use the correct products and tools.  Tools like brushes, false lash applicators and lash curlers for example, make for easy DIY professional makeup.  The best tip however is to spend some time with a MAC artist in store.  The artist can book a session and allow you to physically have the brush in your hand, and with their guidance it will be easy to pick up tricks and techniques for best results.  With stores in Ibadan, Lekki and Ikeja there is no excuse to miss out!

HERE ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS FOR CREATING THE LOOK FOR THE SEASON.

  1. Skin is in! Begin by massaging a light veil of MAC Prep + Prime moisture Infusion into the skin with circular motions using a MAC duo fibre #187 brush. This will allow for an ultra-comfortable wear to your foundation as it serves to hydrate and resurface the skin.  Mattify the centre of the face with MAC Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF50.  Apply your foundation using a MAC #168 tapered powder brush.  MAC Matchmaster foundation and concealer will make for a perfect match.  A lighter concealer can also act as a great highlighter for the centre of the face and eye area.  Amp up your high plains and cheekbones with MAC Cream Colour Base in “Bronze”.  Use MAC Raisin blush to contour and add life to your look by also dusting a light amount into the crease of the eye with a soft blending brush.

2. BLINK BLINK! A gorgeous set of false lashes can take any look from fancy to fabulous. Using a MAC False Lash applicator will make doing this at home easy.  Apply MAC #33 Lashes by holding your head back and settling the lash firmly into the bank at the root of the lashes and allow the adhesive to dry.  Once set, apply a generous coat of MAC InExtreme Dimension mascara.  The #33 lash will look natural and add just the right amount of drama.  Keep the brows natural by light hair like stokes with the precision point of MAC Spiked/Stud eyebrow pencil.  The strength of the brow should be kept at the tail.
