Head of Production Training at Urban Fashion Lab: Positioning Youths for Bigger Things

On a Lagos afternoon, a group of young people are having an intense learning session at the Urban Fashion Lab. The class size is small which makes it perfect because every participant can maximize the learning opportunity and not get lost in the crowd. The instructors can engage every participant most effectively.

The class is also small because there is a basic level of skill needed; every participant in this class is already a tailor. They are driven by an aspiration to do better than the average Nigerian tailor.

Nigeria’s fashion industry is large and still largely untapped. It is inarguable that Nigerians have a strong sense of fashion and thus patronize tailors and designers a lot.  While there is an abundance of skilled tailors and fashion designers, most of them work on a small scale to produce for a handful of clients.

There is still a scarcity of industries that produce quality work on large scale to clothe the 170 million plus Nigerians. In response to this, Kinabuti Fashion Initiative (KFI) along with partners Time for Africa(T4A), Orile Iganmu Progressive Association(OIPA) and LATREIA have identified an opportunity to turn these small-scale tailors into SME-able people.

The aim of the Head of Production training is to equip these ones to be able to supervise a team, manage the order and production of ready to wear clothes like uniforms and to scale up their business.
On this programme, the skilled youth are learning about drafting business plans, safety and security, inventory, pricing, invoicing, leadership and team work.

These participants display the African entrepreneurship spirit and with the acquired skill set, they can earn five times higher than their current income, deliver higher quality products and cause social change.
