AMAA 2015: A Night of Pure Prestige

The year’s edition of the AMAAs, the eleventh in the series, was held for the first time outside the shores of Nigeria, with a star-studded show and a gleeful evening. After rigorous planning and heightened tension, the organizers can now put their thinking caps to rest for a while – that is, until next time.

The event, which took place on Saturday, 26th September, 2015, at the prestigious Board Walk Hotel in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, kicked off with renditions by some of South Africa’s local acts, including soulful live band performance by South African gospel group, Kgotso Makgalema, who put the audience in a mood of praise and thankfulness.

The hosts for the evening were Nollywood actor and producer, Segun Arinze, and American actress, Camille Winbush, best known for her role in playing ‘Vanessa’ on the Bernie Mac Show. The event was fully attended by actors, entertainers and film makers from across the African continent and beyond as well as dignitaries who had supported AMAA from the get go.

Nigeria, alone, picked up to seven awards in various categories including ‘Best Animation’, ‘Achievement in Costume Design’ and ‘Best Comedy Film’.

Other awardees included Tony Vander Heyden, who was given a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’; Business mogul, Tony Elumelu, was appointed Honorary Council for the Africa Film Academy; and, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, who was present at the event, was awarded Mother of Creative Industries.

The event came to a close with a performance by Nigerian artiste, KC.

As the curtains closed on the perfect night of business, leisure and entertainment, the 2015 AMAAs left a glorious mark on the creative industry in Africa. Although, there may have been some short comings and tension during the event, in the end, it turned out a night that celebrated Africa as a continent, bringing Africans of all races, tribes and cultures together under one roof – to celebrate the achievements of our brothers in the entertainment industry.
